FlutterBy is a reference site about butterflies and pollinator planting. It has no user accounts, no newsletter, no comment system and no shop, so there is very little personal data for us to hold in the first place. This page explains the small amount that is collected automatically when you read a page here, and what you can do about it.

Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, our server writes a log entry for each request. That entry contains the page you asked for, the date and time, your IP address, the referring page if there was one, and your browser's user-agent string. We use these logs to count traffic, spot broken links, and detect abuse such as scraping. They are not used to build a profile of you and they are not sold. Log entries are rotated and deleted on the hosting provider's normal schedule.

Cookies

The site itself sets no cookies of its own. If you arrive with no third-party advertising or analytics configured, you can read every page here without a single cookie being written to your device. Where cookies do appear, they come from the third-party services described below, and you can block or delete them in your browser settings at any time without losing access to any part of this site.

Third-party advertising — Google AdSense

This site is supported by advertising served through Google AdSense. Google and its partner vendors use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. This is what makes an ad for a plant nursery appear next to an article about milkweed rather than something entirely unrelated.

  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • Third-party vendors and ad networks may also serve ads on this site and may place or read their own cookies.
  • The DoubleClick DART cookie is used by Google for interest-based advertising; it is one of the cookies covered by the Google Ads settings page linked below.

You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time:

Where required by law, a consent message is shown before advertising cookies are set, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time through the same message or through the links above.

Analytics

We measure readership in aggregate: page views, which pages are read, and roughly where readers arrive from. Aggregate figures tell us which dossiers and which garden plans are worth writing more of. Analytics data is not used to identify individuals and is not combined with advertising data by us.

External links

Some pages link to outside resources — conservation bodies, seed suppliers, botanical references, and the advertising opt-out pages above. Once you follow one of those links you are on someone else's site, governed by their privacy policy and their cookies, not ours. We have no control over what they collect and we cannot delete data they hold.

Your rights (GDPR and CCPA)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or another jurisdiction with equivalent law, you have the right to be informed about the data held about you, to access it, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and for what purpose, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information.

Because this site has no accounts, the only data we can link to you is a server log entry containing your IP address, and those entries are deleted on a rolling basis. Requests about advertising data should go to Google, since we do not control the cookies their systems set. For anything else, write to [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

If the way this site handles data changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated. Any material change — a new advertising partner, a new analytics provider — will be reflected here before it takes effect. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
